Final Project
Project 5
Water is the most abundant liquid on Earth's surface covering about 70 percent of the world and also the most abundant liquid found in our homes. We sometimes forget the usefulness and importance of water. Glass is an non-crystal material which is mostly transparent and serves different purposes. For the purpose of this project, I chose ‘to suspend’ from Serra’s action verb list. In this project, I used water and a glass jar to represent the verb ‘to suspend’. I chose water in addition to the glass jar because it serves as the control in the project and also it is easy to handle as well as transform into the three different state of matter. After several trials with the different verbs and not been able to successfully represent my idea, I finally had a breakthrough with the verb i chose. The initial stages was difficult as i had wanted to represent my idea in an artistic way by floating an egg in water. To float not being part of the verbs, I chose to go with ‘to suspend’. Demonstrating how water will suspend in a glass turned upside down in a mysterious way is something I had always questioned. After researching on the scientific approach in doing this, I came up with this idea. In making this work, I used water, a glass jar, a piece of cardboard and a screen mesh. First of all, I poured the water into the clear glass jar and carefully placed the cardboard on the glass jar opening. By adding pressure on the cardboard and the tip of the glass, I carefully turned the glass containing the water upside down. After, I moved the cardboard away from the tip and the water stays suspended. Wondering how the water stays suspended after taking the cardboard off? First of all, the screen mesh plays a vital role in this project. By placing the screen mesh in the cover of the glass jar, the water stays in the glass even though the cardboard is carefully taken away since the molecules in the water forms a thin membrane on the surface of the screen mesh.
PROJECT ONE ( DIFFERENT VIEW POINTS)
STABLE IMAGE
I pulled over near the Department of Education office in Downtown and decided to explore different images to take a picture. While crossing the road to this image that caught my attention, I accidentally dropped my iPad and shuttered the screen. Determined to finish my project, I decided to keep looking for images. I found a good spot and grabbed my broken iPad. My main problem was deciding which object to capture and what not to capture. I finally decided on this image as it meets the category of stable image. I took several shots from different angel but this particular picture stood out.
ASYMMETRICAL IMAGE
I saw this image on campus and decide to take pictures from different views. After taking a front view shot of the image, I realized I could categorize it under asymmetrical object.
CLOSE UP
I was photographing some ducks by the stream side near my neighborhood when I noticed this rusty electrical equipment. Initially, I did not want to capture this image but decided to photograph it due to its unique appearance. I took a couple of shots from an ant’s eye view, bird’s eye view and also a close up. The close up position was more interesting because it showed the detail rust.
UNSTABLE IMAGE
Knowing that water is unstable, I decided to use this for my unstable image. This picture was taken near the pond. Utilizing a stand up position, I was able to capture this beautiful scene.
OBJECT FROM AN ANT’S EYE VIEW
Sitting outside this weekend, I noticed the bright street light. Considering previous day time pictures of this object, I decided to take a shot at this. The only suitable position for this picture was from the ant’s eye view due to its height.
OBJECT WITH IT’S SURROUNDING
After capturing the stable image which looked really cool, I found this statue of Christopher Columbus with beautiful flowers surrounding it. I knew it was a perfect object. I grabbed my camera and explored few different positions. Due to the size of the statue, I went back about 300 feet just to capture the whole image. I positioned myself and without zooming, I was able to capture this image which looks amazing considering the colors.
RADIAL IMAGE
I was unsuccessful searching around both campus and my community for a radial image. I decided to improvise a radial image with my shop tools and the rim of a car. I took a close-up picture of my car rims but that was not an interesting image. I arranged a couple of tools in a circle with an object at the center and it looks great but still not an interesting picture. I started taking random pictures around me because I was getting frustrated. Finally, I saw this image on top of my house and thought it was cool. From 8 inches above the ground, I took a couple of pictures from different views and selected this one as it stands out.
BIRD’S EYE VIEW IMAGE
With the help of a ladder, I was able to get the finish I had wanted. Using an 8’ ladder, I took a single picture of this fire hydrant considering the height and also being in the middle of the road.
SYMMETRIC IMAGE
Visited a friend this weekend and whiles we were talking, I noticed the side table in his living room. Analyzing the form, I came to a conclusion of using this as my symmetrical image. With my back on the floor, I took three pictures. They were not good so I decide to photograph with my stomach down. It turned out good.
COLOR & TEXTURE
After the scavenger hunt for objects, I stopped at the pond to have a quiet moment. Not paying attention to my surroundings, I sat down to reminisce about the broken iPad. Soon, I found myself staring at the bright colors of the flowers. With a couple of shots sitting on the ground, I went closer and took some more. I also tried the bird’s eye view but was not as colorful as the side view.
The process which I enjoyed going into this project was the close up. With this kind of view, the photographer is has lots of convenience either by standing or kneeling. Also, this view point brings out the details of a picture. I enjoyed doing this project except for the fact that I broke my iPad in the process.
